Day Twenty-Seven

There are a couple of things that I want to share with you today. While I wait for my mom to put the turkey in the oven, and the celery, carrot, onion bath in with it, I am avoiding the kitchen at all costs. Those onions are so strong, the moment I walk in, my eyes burn. It hurts. Today, I am thankful for vegetarian options. That's right. I am a vegetarian. While the rest of my family eats turkey, I will be enjoying some delicious butternut squash ravioli in a brown sugar glaze seasoned with garlic and sage. Whoot! Even when it isn't thanksgiving, I am thankful for vegetarian options and how easy it is to substitute meat for meatless options. My body feels better when I don't eat meat. Today I am thankful for the holy scriptures which guide and direct our lives. Last Sunday, even though I was under the weather, I substitute taught Children's Church. In "Big People Church," as the kiddos call it, they had an read and response that I kept and wanted to share with you today. Give Thanks to the Lord of the Harvest.
"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease." Genesis 8:22
God promised Noah that so long as the earth remained, seedtime and harvest would not end. God continues to provide the blessings of the harvest for us and gives us family, friends, home and work. In good times and in difficult times, give thanks to the Lord of the harvest for his love and care that will not cease.
"He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness." 2 Corinthians 9:10
We give thanks to God when we meet together for worship and when we pray. WE can also give thanks by giving to others. God will provide for us in such abundance that when we, in turn, will be able to share his blessings with others. Give thanks to the Lord of the harvest with your offerings and with donations of food or clothing to those in need.
"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Matthew 9:37-38.
We are blessed with the harvest of this earth, the gifts of God in fields and orchards. Another kind of harvest is the people to be brought into God's kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ. That harvest is plentiful, but workers are needed to gather in. Give thanks to the Lord of the harvest as you pray for pastors, teachers and missionaries to bring in the harvest of believers.
"The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels." Matthew 13:39
One day it will be time for the final harvest. On that great day Jesus will return and send out his angels to gather his people, raising them up to live forever in his presence. As you wait for that day, give thanks to the Lord of the harvest, who by his death and resurrection brought you into his kingdom.
"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with Praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!" Psalm 100:4.
In churches and around dinner tables, we are surrounded by people who are "walking thank you notes" people who express their thanks to God every day. Their thanksgiving to God is so strong that it inspires gratitude in each one of us of the simple blessings of sun, rain, a hug, a delicious meal, a favorite TV show, or a moment of quiet reflection. Give thanks to the Lord of the harvest for people of thankfulness who instill the gift of gratitude in us, for God's provision for us in big and small ways each and every day. Every day is Thanksgiving Day in the eyes of those who put their faith and trust in God. And every day is an opportunity to give thanks for the harvest.
Finally, today I am thankful for thankful for the rich, warm, roast and aroma of freshly brewed coffee.
