October/November Reading List

I love a good book, especially those books which encourage my walk with the Lord. If you're an avid reader, like me, it is hard to just have one good book on hand. Here is a list of some of my favorite books from October and ones I plan to read through the month of November.

1. What Love Is, by Kelly Minter. This book is actually a group Bible Study apart of her Living Room Series which focuses on the Letters of 1, 2, 3 John. I did this study before last January and when it was offered again, I jumped at the chance. Not because I already had the book and had completed the assignments, but because I wanted to see how I had grown over the last few months. It has been astonishing. New things have been jumping out at me right an left. Like this quote from Session 3 Day 3: " Jesus Himself set you apart for a sacred purpose. In essence He's poured the consecrating oil over you, He's stroked it across your forehead, you are sealed with His spirit." (Pg. 83) and this one from the same page. "It doesn't matter what everyone else is up to. YOU abide in Him. Sometimes we have to quit looking around us and go back to the beginning, do what we know to do, let Him teach us, and dwell safely within Him. All kinds of teachings will come and go, but never abdicate the truth that remains in you. Do this by remaining in Him."

2. The Fitting Room, by Kelly Minter. This is a lovely book about putting on the character of Christ. It centers around the words of the Apostle Paul in Colossians 3:12-13 which says "Since God chose you to be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. You must make allowances for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you." It has been a fabulous journey thus far, and there is so much that I want to share with you.

3. Dressing with Dignity, by Colleen Hammond. I have not yet started this book, but I am greatly looking forward to digging into it.

4. The Good, The Bad, and the Grace of God, by Jep and Jessica Roberston. I have barely reached chapter 5 of this book about how God transformed the lives of these two Duck Dynasty stars. Though, from what I have seen and read about them already this will be a wonderful testimony of God's love, forgiveness and mercy.

5. No Other Gods, by Kelly Minter. Can you tell I am a Kelly Minter fan? She is an excellent writer and evangelist. Though, I have not yet cracked the binding of this book, it is about revealing and submitting to God our modern day idols. I have a feeling this will be a tough, but well needed read.

6. Does God Care about What I Wear, by Nacy Leigh Demoss. This is a brief pamphlet highlight scriptural texts about why it is important for women to dress modestly and ways to discern if our attitudes, behaviors, and attire are pleasing to God.

7. A Shepard Looks at the 23 Psalm, by W. Phillip Keller. Think you know the 23rd Psalm? Think again. Keller was a Shepard and his book gives a Shepard's insight into the 23rd Psalm. It is absolutely mind blowing how he takes apart the metaphor's David used to describe the providence and love of God over our lives. One of my favorite quotes comes from pages 74 and 75 in Chapter 5 "He Restores my Soul." : "There is something intensely personal, intensely tender, intensely endearing, yet intensely fraught with danger in the picture. On the one hand there is the sheep so helpless, so utterly immobilized, though otherwise strong, healthy and flourishing; while on the other hand there is the attentive owner, quick and ready to come to its rescue-ever patient, tender and helpful....I see Him again and again as the Good Shepard picking up cast sheep. The tenderness, the love, the patience that He used to restore Peter's soul after the terrible tragedy of his temptations is a classic picture of the Christ coming to restore one of His own. And so He comes quietly, gently, reassuringly to me no matter when or where or how I may be cast down."

Of the books which I have begun reading, or have already read, especially numbers 1, 2, and 7, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy and delve into them. You will find them both refreshing and challenging.

(number 7 is not featured).
